The first section of Port of Aalborg’s new rail terminal is now open for business

Port of Aalborg is in full swing with a major expansion of the port’s rail facilities, adding a 43,000-square-metre new rail terminal at the East Port. The first phase of this expansion is now finished and ready for use.

In the spring, Port of Aalborg launched an extensive expansion of the port’s rail infrastructure, which includes a new terminal in the southeastern section of the East Port in Aalborg East. Only a few months later, the first phase of the new terminal area was ready for use.

The first phase involved a new 4,200-square-metre terminal area, 190 metres of tram tracks and construction of 12,500 square metres of hard surface. This makes a considerable improvement to Port of Aalborg’s rail infrastructure, and we are now able to offer companies better conditions for leases and setting up operations in attractive areas of the port:

‘With the first phase of the expansion complete, Port of Aalborg is able to free up more space for companies to lease premises right next to the rail network. From here, they have direct access to 4,000 rail hubs throughout Europe,’ says Rasmus Munk Kolind, Commercial Manager at Port of Aalborg Logistics.

Construction of the new terminal area is one element of Port of Aalborg’s ambition to make it even more attractive for companies in North Jutland to transport goods by rail, and companies are increasingly adding this form of transport to their mix. As indicated by an almost doubling of the number of single wagon loads leaving the port of Aalborg last year, demand for moving goods by rail is steadily increasing.

‘At Port of Aalborg, we expect rail freight to play an even greater role in the future. An increasing number of businesses consider rail freight a competitive logistics solution, on an equal footing with transport by road. Therefore, we welcome this additional capacity, which will ensure that we’re able to meet the increasing demand,’ Rasmus Munk Kolind concludes.

Work on the second phase of the new freight terminal is in full swing and expected to be ready for use during the fourth quarter of this year. The second phase includes extension of the track to 430 metres, adding a further 4,900 square metres to the terminal area. An additional 21,200 square metres of land will enable new businesses to set up operations right next to the rail track.
